About this walk

This gentle circular walk climbs onto Black Down, the highest point in West Sussex, for far-reaching views across the Weald. At just under 3 kilometres with only modest ascent, it makes an ideal short outing, following well-trodden paths through heathland and woodland fringes.

The route takes in three highlights of the ridge. The Temple of the Winds is a celebrated viewpoint on the eastern edge, where a curved bench opens out to a sweeping panorama over the South Downs. From there the path curves back across the plateau to the Blackdown western viewpoint, offering a contrasting outlook towards the Surrey Hills. Between them, the open summit of Blackdown itself provides big skies and heather-clad slopes.

Nearby features add interest for those inclined to linger, including the Brian Checkley memorial viewpoint and the quiet woodland of Abesters Copse and Blackdown Copse. Underfoot the going is generally easy, with sandy tracks and a few gentle gradients, making this a rewarding taster of one of the most atmospheric corners of the county.
