About this walk
This short circular trail offers a gentle introduction to Bentham and its surrounding countryside on the western edge of North Yorkshire. Setting out from the town, the route loops out towards Fowgill before returning, covering just over two miles with a modest climb of around 70 metres. At an easy pace it takes about three quarters of an hour, making it a good choice for a half-morning stroll or an after-lunch leg stretch.
Along the way you pass a mix of village lanes and open country, with views over the fields that surround the small settlement of Fowgill. Back in Bentham itself, the walk takes in the Methodist Chapel and threads past a handful of welcoming places to pause, including Hoggs 'n' Heifers, the Black Bull and the Coach House Inn.
The circular shape means you finish back where you started, with plenty of options in town for a drink or a bite to eat. It is an ideal warm-up walk if you are planning to explore more of the Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland country nearby.
