About this walk
This easy 3.8 km route traces the western edge of Durham city, beginning at Harrison House and passing the Waddington Street United Reformed Church before reaching Redhills, home to the Durham Miners' Hall. The hall is a landmark of the region's mining heritage and a fitting early stop on a walk that threads together civic, industrial and natural history.
From Redhills the path drops into Flass Vale Local Nature Reserve, a quiet wooded valley tucked surprisingly close to the city centre. Emerging from the trees, you cross beneath the imposing arches of the Relly Mill Viaduct, which carries the East Coast Main Line across the valley. Look out for nearby curiosities including Hangman's Hill, the commemorative 20,000th mast on the East Coast Main Line, the house at 20 Allergate, the Neville's Cross monument itself and a roadside obelisk.
The walk finishes on Crossgate, a short stroll from Durham's medieval core, making it an easy add-on to a wider city visit and straightforward to reach without a car.
