About this walk

This gentle linear walk in the rolling Hampshire countryside near Hinton Ampner traces ground associated with the Battle of Cheriton, one of the significant engagements of the English Civil War. Starting from The Hinton Arms, the route heads out across quiet farmland and along field-edge paths, with wide views over the chalk downs that mark the upper reaches of the Itchen valley.

Along the way you pass a tranquil Lily Pond before threading between patches of woodland including Cowdown Copse, Dark Copse and Scrubb's Copse. The source of the River Itchen rises nearby, and interpretation of the 1644 battlefield sits within this same broad landscape of hedgerows, copses and gentle ridges.

The walk finishes in the village of Bramdean, an easy 5.1 km stroll with modest ascent of around 140 metres. At roughly an hour and a quarter it suits a relaxed half-day out, ideally rounded off with a drink back at the start or refreshment in Bramdean itself.
