About this walk
This gentle 3.6 mile loop begins in the small settlement of Barmpton, just north-east of Darlington, and heads out into the quiet arable country that fringes the town. Field paths and farm tracks lead up to Fox Hill, the modest high point of the route, where the going is easy and the views open out across the surrounding lowlands.
From Fox Hill the walk drops down towards Ketton Bridge, crossing over Newton Beck as it winds through the fields. The lane onward passes Little Ketton Farm, with Kettonleas Wood providing a welcome patch of greenery to the side. The return leg curves back towards Barmpton by way of Low Skerningham, following well-defined tracks between hedgerows.
With only 83 metres of ascent spread across the whole circuit, this is a relaxed outing suitable for most walkers and a good choice if you want a taste of the countryside without straying far from Darlington. Allow around an hour and a half at a steady pace.
