Bardennock Trail

The Bardennock Trail is a 7.1 km linear route through the quiet uplands of Dumfries and Galloway, gaining around 272 metres of ascent over roughly two hours of walking. It begins near the remains of the Polmaddy Inn, a reminder of the small settlement that once served travellers passing through this corner of Galloway, before heading out onto open ground.

From the old inn the path leads past the weathered remains of stone crosses and climbs steadily onto Bardennoch Hill, where the views open out across the surrounding moors and forest. The route finishes at a hillside war memorial, a quiet spot with a wide outlook over the countryside below.

The wider area is rich in prehistory and rural heritage, with a Bronze Age round cairn, the Cairn Avel long cairn, an old corn mill and Greenhead Strand all lying within easy reach. Together they make this a rewarding walk for anyone interested in both landscape and the long human story written across it.
