Ballyconnell Canal Loop

Starting at Annagh on the outskirts of Ballyconnell, this gentle linear walk follows quiet ground through Annagh Woods before joining the towpath of the Shannon-Erne Waterway. The mixed woodland gives way to open water views, with the canal threading its way through the soft drumlin country that characterises this corner of County Cavan.

The route passes Ballyconnell Lock L2, one of the working locks along the restored waterway, where you can pause to watch cruisers ease through. A little further on stands the Kieran Doherty TD Cavan Monaghan Memorial, before the path arrives at Russell Quay, a pleasant spot to rest by the water.

With only 64 m of ascent spread over 4.9 km, the walking is easy throughout and well suited to an unhurried hour or so. Nearby lie Annagh Lough, Bray Wood, and the churches of Tomregan Civil Parish, including Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Tomregan Parish Church, all worth a short detour if you have time to extend the outing.
