About this walk

This short circular loop in the drumlin country of County Cavan begins and ends at Drumkeery, following a waymarked trail known locally as PJ's Way. At just 3.7 km with a modest 130 m of ascent, it packs a surprising sense of variety into an hour's walking, threading between wooded slopes and quiet lake views.

From the Drumkeery trailhead the path climbs gently towards Rebel Hill, a highpoint that opens views across the rolling landscape of small hills and hidden water that gives this corner of Cavan its character. Continuing round the loop, walkers pass a memorial marker inscribed in memory of Patrick Kiernan before descending back towards the start.

The wider area rewards a longer visit. Nearby you'll find Crocknahattin, the earthwork remains at Drumbannan Fort, and the waters of the Blackwater, along with the atmospheric Mill Race close to Drumkeery itself. Together they make Bailieborough Castle Lake a fine base for a slow half-day of walking and exploring on foot.
