About this walk
This short linear walk sets out from Arlington Court in North Devon and drops gently down the Coombeshead valley to the village of Loxhore. At just 2.4 km with only a modest ascent, it makes an easy half-hour outing through characteristic Devon countryside of woodland edges, pasture and quiet lanes.
Leaving the estate, the path passes close to Wilderness Pond and skirts Barton Belt, a strip of estate woodland that gives shelter and shade in equal measure. Views open out towards South Down Plantation as you follow the valley downhill, with the wooded slopes rolling away on either side.
Before you set off, the cluster of buildings around the estate is worth a look, including the Carriage House and the parish church of St James at Arlington. The walk finishes in Loxhore, a small settlement tucked into the folds of the valley, making a natural end point for a linear stroll.
