This short circular walk at Croft Castle in Herefordshire packs a surprising amount of character into just 2.4 kilometres. Starting near the Carpenters Tea Room, the route loops gently through the parkland surrounding Croft Castle, taking in the Walled Garden along the way. With only 51 metres of ascent, it is an easy stroll suitable for most walkers and can comfortably be completed in around half an hour.
The path passes a fine collection of veteran trees, giving the walk its name, and there are plenty of intriguing features to seek out nearby. Look for the Gothic Pumphouse, the curious Sunken Chamber and the old Icehouse, all reminders of how the estate once functioned. A Charcoal Burning Platform hints at the woodland industries that shaped this landscape.
The Walled Garden makes a peaceful pause point before the loop returns you to the castle and tea room. Compact, varied and rich in interest, this is an ideal outing for a slow morning or a gentle afternoon exploring Croft Castle and Parkland.
