About this walk
This circular route in the gentle Vale of the White Horse links three distinctive Oxfordshire landmarks across quiet farmland and woodland. Setting out through Coxwell Wood, the path threads between mature trees before opening onto working fields, where hedgerows and copses shape the wider agricultural landscape.
The centrepiece is the medieval Great Coxwell Barn, a vast stone-built tithe barn now in the care of the National Trust and long celebrated for its cathedral-like timber roof. From here the walk continues towards Badbury Clump, a beech-crowned hilltop marking the ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort with sweeping views across the vale, particularly memorable when bluebells carpet the woodland floor in spring.
Along the way you can extend your explorations to Warren Copse, General's Copse and Fern Copse, or pause at St Giles church and the nearby Contemplation Garden before closing the loop. At 6.3 km with modest ascent, it is a rewarding half-day outing that pairs ancient history with a working farmed countryside.
