About this walk
This gentle 2.8 km ramble links two very different churches on either side of the Cuckmere Valley. Starting in the pretty village of Alfriston, you pass the timber-framed Alfriston Clergy House and the imposing St Andrew's Church, sometimes known as the Cathedral of the Downs, before dropping down to cross the river.
From the valley floor the path climbs steadily up the eastern side of the Cuckmere, gaining around 105 m of ascent through open downland and woodland fringes. Your destination is the Church of the Good Shepherd at Lullington, a diminutive flint chapel tucked away among the trees and easily missed if you are not looking for it.
Back in Alfriston, the village high street offers plenty of reward for tired legs. The Star Inn and Ye Olde Smugglers Inne serve traditional pub fare, Badgers Tea House is well placed for a pot of tea and cake, and the striking Flint Tower is worth a look before you head home.
