About this walk

This gentle linear walk links two of the South Downs' most characterful villages, beginning in Alfriston beside the medieval parish church of St Andrew and the neighbouring Alfriston Clergy House. The thatched, timber-framed Clergy House sits on The Tye, the open green beside the River Cuckmere, and makes a memorable starting point before you head north out of the village.

Field paths and quiet tracks lead across gently rising downland pasture, with wide views opening towards the chalk ridge of the Downs. The route eases you through classic East Sussex countryside of hedgerows, sheep fields and scattered copses before arriving at Berwick and the Church of St Michael & All Angels, known for its distinctive Flint Tower.

The church makes a natural finish, and The Cricketer's Arms just nearby is a welcome spot for a drink before heading back. At 4.4 km with only 76 m of ascent, it's an easy hour on foot, ideal as a half-day outing paired with a return by the same route or a local bus.
