Abinger Roughs Rhododendron and Bluebell Walk, North Downs West

This short circular walk sets out from Abinger Hammer, a pretty Surrey village tucked beneath the wooded slopes of the North Downs. Before you leave the village, it is worth pausing by the famous Abinger Hammer Clock and the village sign, and perhaps stopping in at the Abinger Hammer Tea Rooms for something to fuel the climb ahead.

From the village the path rises gently onto Abinger Roughs, a peaceful patchwork of woodland and heath managed by the National Trust. In spring the route earns its name, with rhododendrons in flower and drifts of bluebells lighting up the woodland floor. Along the way you pass the stone cross that commemorates Samuel Wilberforce, a quiet spot with far-reaching views out across the Tillingbourne valley.

The return leg loops back down through mixed woodland, with the option of a short detour past Piney Copse before rejoining the lanes into Abinger Hammer. At just under 3 km with a modest 123 m of ascent, it is an easy outing that packs in a lot of Surrey character in well under an hour.
