About this walk
This 11.6 km section of A Pennine Journey threads through some of the finest limestone landscape in North Yorkshire, climbing a total of 388 m as it links quiet hamlets with high open ground. The route sets out across pastures scattered with ancient tumuli, a reminder that these hills have been walked and farmed for thousands of years.
You drop into the tiny settlement of Feizor, tucked beneath pale crags and long a welcome halfway pause for walkers crossing this corner of the Yorkshire Dales. From here the path rises again through walled lanes and sheep country before reaching Trow Gill, a steep-sided limestone gorge that funnels you between towering walls of rock. It is a dramatic and memorable stretch, and a fitting climax to the day.
Nearby, the celebrated cavern of Gaping Gill, the woodland cascades of Clapham Falls, the curious folly known as The Grotto and the handsome village of Austwick all reward anyone with time to linger. Allow around 3 hours 15 minutes for the walk itself, and expect a properly challenging day out.
