783 Wigmore – Parkwood – Farthing Corner – Rainham

The 783 isn't a tourist route, but if you pair it with a walk and a little local knowledge it makes for a genuinely pleasant half day exploring a corner of the Medway Towns that most visitors never see. Start at Rainham Station, easily reached on Southeastern services from London Victoria, Bromley South, Chatham or Faversham.

Before boarding, it is worth a quick wander into Rainham itself. The parish church of St Margaret of Antioch, just off the High Street, has medieval origins and a handsome ragstone tower, and the small parade of shops and bakeries near the station is a good place to pick up a coffee and something for later.

Take the 783 up through Manor Farm and on to Wigmore. The Queen's Head is a useful landmark to alight at: from here you are on the edge of open country, with footpaths leading south onto the chalk towards Hempstead Woods and the wider North Downs. A short ramble in this direction gives you proper Kent downland views, with the Medway valley spread out below.

Back on the bus, the loop through Parkwood is the most local part of the journey. If you stay on board you get a real sense of how this large 1970s estate was planned, with its curving roads, green verges and tucked-away shopping centre. It is also a handy way to reach Parkwood Shopping Centre itself, which has everyday cafes and a supermarket if you need a refuel.

Through Meresborough, the route brushes close to the countryside around Farthing Corner. Walkers can pick up paths leading towards Hartlip and the orchards beyond, an area still very much shaped by Kent's fruit growing tradition. The little lanes here feel a long way from the M2, even though the motorway is only minutes away.

Returning through Parkwood and back into Rainham, hop off near the shopping centre or the post office to explore the older heart of the village. Berengrave Nature Reserve, a former chalk pit now reclaimed by wildlife, is within walking distance and makes a lovely quiet finish to the day before you head back to the station forecourt.

It is a modest itinerary, but the 783 turns an ordinary suburban loop into a relaxed way of getting under the skin of Rainham and its surrounding downs.
