500, Fort William to Mallaig

Jaw-dropping, 'Wow Factor', thrill a minute scenery is what this amazing journey is all about. The bus leaves Fort William behind, over the river, into Claggan and with Inverlochy on the left. Over the river again and the bus straddles Loch Eil, through Fassfern and Corribeg, glancing over to Garvan.

Inland the Scottish Citylink 500 weaves its way, through rugged scenery, overlooked by stunning, snow-capped mountains. It winds round to Craigag, then Glenfinnan, gazing down over Loch Shiel. On a clear, cloudless day, the view is unbeatable, but even when the sun isn't out, there's a deep ambience - isolated, sometimes moody, a little foreboding even, but hugely evocative. Look out for the remote but fabulous Glenfinnan Monument and the famous rail viaduct.

Northwards the journey continues up the Back of Keppoch, a most charming of coastal villages and Glenacross, then round the tip of the bay before heading even further north, straddling the sea and nestling into Mallaig, with its breathtaking serenity, clear coastal air and wonderful local hospitality. looking out onto the Hebrides and with Calmac Ferries taking folk onwards to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Mallaig is the perfect finale to the most stunning of routes in the UK and beyond - but it's also just the beginning for an onward adventure!

Start the day in Fort William with breakfast at The Wildcat, a relaxed café known for excellent coffee, hearty breakfast rolls and good vegetarian options. After eating, take a short wander along the pedestrianised High Street, browsing outdoor shops and local stores before heading to West Highland Museum. This small but fascinating museum tells the story of the Jacobite uprisings, Highland life and the region’s connection to The Battle of Culloden. It is an excellent introduction to the history of the Highlands before travelling further west.

From the nearby bus stop, board the scenic 500 service heading towards Mallaig. The journey quickly leaves the town behind and begins weaving through some of the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland. Mountains rise on either side while sea lochs appear and disappear beside the road, offering constant views.

Your first stop should be the famous village of Glenfinnan. From the bus stop, walk a few minutes to Glenfinnan Viaduct, the sweeping railway bridge that curves across the valley and became famous in the Harry Potter films. A short walk up the hillside viewpoint offers the best view across the viaduct and the surrounding glen. Nearby stands the tall Glenfinnan Monument, built to commemorate the moment when Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard here in 1745 to begin the Jacobite uprising. The monument sits beside the peaceful waters of Loch Shiel, where you can enjoy one of the most iconic Highland views.

After exploring, hop back on the bus and continue west. The road threads between rugged hills and sparkling sea lochs before finally arriving in the lively fishing port of Mallaig.

Spend the afternoon exploring the harbour where fishing boats and ferries come and go. Walk along the waterfront, browse small gift shops and watch seabirds circling above the busy pier. Seafood is a highlight here, and a great lunch stop is The Cabin Restaurant, famous for its fresh fish and chips. Afterwards, take a gentle walk along the shoreline towards the beautiful Mallaig Harbour viewpoints, where you can see across the water to the islands of Skye and Rum on a clear day.

Later in the afternoon, return to the bus stop for the journey back to Fort William, watching the dramatic Highland scenery unfold again in the changing light as the day draws to a close.
