242, Hatfield – Potters Bar – Waltham Cross

The 242 is one of Uno's longer Hertfordshire workings, a meandering loop that begins outside Dame Alice Owen's School in Potters Bar and threads its way north through Hatfield before swinging back south via Cuffley and Cheshunt to Waltham Cross. It is a rider's route rather than a tourist showpiece, but the window-side view takes in some genuinely handsome corners of the county: parkland edges, commuter villages of red brick and clipped hedges, and the wooded plateau between the East Coast Main Line and the Lea Valley.

Leaving Potters Bar, the bus quickly climbs out of Dugdale Hill and strikes north towards the Hatfield Business Park. The first surprise comes as you pass the de Havilland Campus of the University of Hertfordshire, the old aerodrome where the Comet, Mosquito and Trident were designed and flown. Street names like Gypsy Moth Avenue, Albatross Way and Hearle Way keep that aviation memory alive long after the runways have gone.

Beyond the campus, the route swings past The Galleria, the long glass shopping mall that famously straddles the A1(M), and on into Hatfield town centre. South Hatfield gives way quickly to open country at Marshmoor, where the bus skirts the East Coast Main Line and the brick cottages of Welham Green cluster around the station. The villages of Brookmans Park and Little Heath follow, all leafy avenues, golf course fringes and the tall masts of the old BBC transmitter site rising above the trees.

Back through Potters Bar, the 242 turns east into the gentler greenery of Northaw, passing the Two Brewers and the wooded estate around Northaw House before dropping into Cuffley. From the station it climbs again to Goff's Oak, a long ribbon village of nurseries and paddocks, then loops methodically through Flamstead End, Rosedale and the Brookfield Centre, gathering shoppers and college students at every turn.

The final stretch runs down the old Roman line towards Theobalds Grove and Cheshunt Old Pond, where the Lea Valley opens out on the right. The bus finishes at Waltham Cross bus station, a few steps from the medieval Eleanor Cross that Edward I raised in 1291 for his queen, before turning around and retracing the whole loop back to Hatfield and Potters Bar.

The 242 makes an unusually rewarding day out for a suburban bus, looping from Potters Bar through Hatfield, the Hertfordshire villages and down to Waltham Cross. With a single ticket you can dip in and out at half a dozen genuinely interesting stops, mixing aviation history, parkland walks, big-shed shopping and a medieval royal monument.

Start your day in Potters Bar itself. The high street is a brisk, friendly mix of independent cafes and chain bakeries, and a short walk from the bus stand brings you to Oakmere Park, a pleasant landscaped green with a lake and bandstand that makes a fine spot for a morning coffee before you board.

As the bus arrives at the Hatfield Business Park, hop off at the de Havilland Campus. The University of Hertfordshire's grounds occupy the old aerodrome, and the nearby de Havilland Aircraft Museum at London Colney (a short taxi or onward bus ride) is one of the best small aviation museums in the country, home to the prototype Mosquito. Even staying on the campus, the street names and preserved hangars give a real sense of the site's history.

Back on board, the next natural stop is The Galleria at Hatfield. The long curved glass roof spans the A1(M) and houses dozens of outlet shops, restaurants and a cinema, making it an easy lunch stop whatever the weather. From there it is a short ride into Hatfield town centre, where a brief diversion on foot leads to Hatfield House, the Jacobean home of the Cecil family and one of the finest country houses in England, set in formal gardens and ancient parkland.

Re-joining the 242, the route runs through Welham Green and on to Brookmans Park. Get off near Bradmore Green for a wander around the village pond and a stroll into Gobions Wood, a quiet local nature reserve with the remnants of an 18th century landscape garden. Continuing on through Northaw and Cuffley, the bus skirts the edge of Northaw Great Wood Country Park, a lovely patch of ancient woodland with waymarked walks back towards Cuffley station.

The final leg drops you into Cheshunt and Waltham Cross. Step off at the bus station and walk a couple of minutes to the Eleanor Cross, one of only three survivors of the twelve crosses Edward I raised in 1291 to mark the resting places of Queen Eleanor's funeral cortege. Nearby, Cedars Park occupies the grounds of the old Theobalds Palace, where James I died in 1625, and is a fine place to round off the day before catching the 242 back to Potters Bar.

It is a rare ride that bundles a Jacobean palace, a jet-age aerodrome, a country park and a medieval royal cross into a single day ticket, but the 242 manages it.
