An interesting, lesser-known fact about Petts Wood is that it was originally part of the Great North Wood, a vast oak forest that once covered much of southeast London.
Journey Overview
This is a fab trip through scenic suburbia and the gathering momentum of London appearing in the distance, tantalisingly close!
Look out for the ponds at Priory Gardens, just as the 208 bus starts its journey before meandering through the busy Orpington High Street to the historic War Memorial then steeply up the hill in Crofton Road, then down the leafy Crofton Lane, to suburban Petts Wood.
Independent shops and larger chains abound in Petts Wood, with its appealing 1930s style shopfronts and semi-detached houses. Down Southborough Lane, the 208 continues its adventure, with the becalming retreat of Jubilee Park, on the right and out onto Bromley Common, turning right with Norman Park on the left, it’s horses grazing in the distance.
Down Masons Hill, the 208 goes before making its way up Bromley High Street, weaving round the back of the Glades Shopping Centre into the slightly old fashioned, almost timeless Market Square. To Downham the bus makes its way, the landscape built up now, but with a range of different styles of architecture as Bellingham appears and then Catford. Look out for the large cat sculpture and the grandiose, historic Broadway Theatre.
Looking out the front of the 208 bus, there’s a real sense of occasion as tower blocks, modern office buildings, sky-scrapper style loom on the horizon as Lewisham appears, with its market, fab shops and the gateway via bus or Docklands Light Railway to the delights of Greenwich, it’s maritime museum and setting, as well as blissful Blackheath and beyond!
A Fab Day Out!
A day out on the 208 bus offers a charming mix of suburban sights, green spaces, and local culture, perfect for exploring southeast London at a relaxed pace.
