About this journey

A circular Medway service linking Hempstead Valley with Chatham Waterfront via Wigmore, Parkwood, Rainham, Darland and Gillingham.

Journey overview

The 132 is one of Arriva's cross-Medway workhorses, a circular service connecting Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre with Chatham Waterfront Bus Station via Wigmore, Parkwood, Rainham, Darland and Gillingham. It is a route built for everyday Medway life: school runs, shopping trips and hospital visits, but the loop also stitches together a surprising amount of local character if you ride it as a visitor.

Boarding at Hempstead Valley, the bus pulls away from the covered shopping centre and climbs into Wigmore, a leafy hilltop suburb perched above the M2. From the upper-deck windows there are glimpses across the wooded slopes of Capstone Farm Country Park to the south, before the road drops down through the residential streets of Parkwood, where neat 1970s and 80s housing fans out around the local shopping precinct and St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic School.

The middle stretch is pure Rainham. The 132 threads past Tanker Hill and down Ploughmans Way, joining the A2 Watling Street near Rainham village centre. Here the view is the proper Medway high street: the parish church of St Margaret with its flint tower, the war memorial, the Cricketers pub and the long line of independent shops, takeaways and the Post Office that have grown up along the old Roman road. The Tesco superstore on Bowaters provides the modern counterpoint before the bus rolls on towards Gillingham.

132 Chatham – Rainham Mark – Rainham – Parkwood – Hempstead Valley

Through Featherby Road and Eastcourt Lane the scenery becomes solidly suburban Gillingham, with the route passing the local landmark of Jezreels, the surviving gatehouse of the famously eccentric 19th-century Jezreelite tower. The bus then curls down past St Augustine's Church, Windmill Road and the back of Chatham railway station before sweeping into Chatham Waterfront Bus Station, with the masts and cranes of the Historic Dockyard visible across the River Medway.

From the Waterfront stand the 132 turns straight back out and retraces its loop, climbing again through Gillingham, Darland and Rainham to Parkwood, Wigmore and Hempstead Valley. It is not a long-distance scenic run, but as a way of seeing how the Medway towns actually knit together, between dockyard, high street and hilltop estate, it is hard to beat.

Fab day out

The 132 makes a handy backbone for a day spent dipping into the eastern Medway towns, with Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre as the natural starting point. Free parking, a Marks and Spencer, John Lewis collection point and a long run of high street names make it an easy place to begin, and the bus stand sits right outside the main entrance.

Hop on towards Chatham and within a few minutes the route is climbing through Wigmore. If you fancy stretching your legs before the day proper begins, Capstone Farm Country Park is only a short walk from the Wigmore stops, with 113 hectares of meadows, woodland and a fishing lake to explore.

Back on the bus, the run through Parkwood and down to Rainham brings you onto the old Watling Street. Step off near the Post Office or the Cricketers and you are in the heart of Rainham village, with the medieval parish church of St Margaret of Antioch and a cluster of cafes and bakeries along the High Street, ideal for a mid-morning coffee.

Continuing on through Gillingham, look out for the gaunt brick gatehouse of Jezreels Tower as the bus passes the junction at Canterbury Street, a genuinely odd piece of Medway history. A short walk from the Jezreels stop also brings you to the Royal Engineers Museum at Brompton, where uniforms, medals and military engineering exhibits trace the corps from the 18th century to the present day.

Stay on to Chatham Waterfront and you arrive on the edge of the regenerated riverside. From here it is a short walk to the Historic Dockyard Chatham, home to HMS Cavalier, HMS Ocelot and the Victorian Ropery, easily a half-day in itself. The Dockside Outlet Centre and the river walk towards Sun Pier are also close at hand.

To round the day off, the return loop of the 132 drops you neatly back at Hempstead Valley for an early evening meal at one of the centre's restaurants before heading home, having seen a slice of Medway life that most visitors miss.
