About this attraction

About Woolbeding Bridge, Midhurst

Woolbeding Bridge is a narrow stone footbridge crossing the River Rother a short walk north-west of Midhurst in West Sussex. Believed to date from the 15th or 16th century, it was originally a packhorse route linking the village of Woolbeding with the surrounding estates and the market town of Midhurst. The bridge carries only foot traffic today, with its low parapets and worn stone arches giving a clear sense of the pre-industrial road network that once threaded through this corner of the South Downs.

The setting is quietly rural. The river runs slowly here between meadows and mature trees, and the bridge sits close to the parish church of All Hallows and the grounds of Woolbeding House, an 18th-century property owned by the National Trust. Cattle graze the water meadows in summer and the surrounding walks form part of the wider Rother valley footpath network, with the Serpent Trail and New Lipchis Way passing nearby.

Most visitors combine the bridge with a longer circular walk from Midhurst, taking in the Cowdray ruins, the riverside path and the neighbouring hamlet of Woolbeding. Parking in the immediate area is very limited, so it is best reached on foot from the town, roughly a mile and a half away. There are no facilities at the bridge itself, but Midhurst has plenty of pubs and cafes for afterwards.
