About this attraction
About West Sands Beach, St Andrews
West Sands Beach is one of Scotland's finest coastal destinations, a long crescent of golden sand backed by grass dunes and extending northwards from the Old Course towards the Eden Estuary. The beach faces due north and offers unobstructed views across the North Sea. In calm conditions, the water is clear and warm enough for summer swimming; the bay is popular with swimmers, surfers, and kitesurfers. A coastal path runs the full length of the beach, making it ideal for long walks with changing views depending on tide and light.
The beach comes alive throughout the year. In summer it attracts families and water-sports enthusiasts; in winter, the wild conditions draw photographers and those seeking dramatic coastal scenery. The dune system is rich in coastal plants, and the foreshore reveals pools and rocky outcrops at low tide, popular with children exploring marine life. The beach connects easily to the town centre of St Andrews to the south, and merges northwards into the Tentsmuir Nature Reserve. Whether for a seaside ramble, a picnic with a view, or simply to stand and watch the tide, West Sands offers space and natural beauty year-round.
