Wear Valley Railway

The Wear Valley Railway is a heritage line running along part of the historic route between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope, following the River Wear through the countryside of County Durham. Operated by the Weardale Railway charitable trust, it uses restored diesel and occasional steam-hauled services to carry passengers along a scenic branch that once served the lead mines, limestone quarries and market towns of the upper dale.

Trains typically run from Bishop Auckland West station, sharing the town's mainline hub, and head westward through stops including Witton-le-Wear, Wolsingham, Frosterley and Stanhope. You'll pass wooded riverbanks, stone-built villages and old industrial sites that once made Weardale one of the most productive mining valleys in Britain. The journey gives a good sense of how the railway shaped the region in the 19th century, moving lead, ironstone and quarry stone down to Tyneside.

Onboard experiences vary through the year, from standard heritage services to themed events such as afternoon tea trips, cream teas and seasonal specials. The stations themselves are worth a wander, with restored platforms, signal equipment and small displays telling the story of the line. It pairs well with a visit to the Auckland Project attractions in Bishop Auckland at one end, or the market town of Stanhope at the other.
