Washington Arts Centre

Washington Arts Centre is a community-focused arts venue set within Fatfield Barns, a converted 18th-century farmstead on the edge of the Washington Wetlands. The stone barns have been sensitively adapted to house a small theatre, gallery spaces, artist studios and a café, making it a rare survival of rural buildings within the new town of Washington.

The programme covers live music, comedy, folk sessions, spoken word and small-scale drama, alongside regular exhibitions from North East artists and makers. Workshops in painting, printmaking, pottery and creative writing run throughout the year, and the resident studio artists often open their doors to visitors.

The setting itself is part of the appeal: the courtyard and surrounding paths connect easily to the Wear riverside and the wildfowl centre, so a visit can be combined with a walk along the river. It is a useful stop on the Country Ranger route for anyone wanting a quieter, more local cultural experience than the big Newcastle and Sunderland venues offer.
