About this attraction

About St Mary Magdalene and St Denys Church, Midhurst

The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene and St Denys sits at the heart of Midhurst's old town, tucked behind the market square and close to the Cowdray Ruins. Its unusual double dedication reflects two medieval chapels that were combined into a single parish church, and the building you see today mixes work from the 12th century onwards with substantial Victorian restoration by the architect J. L. Pearson in the 1880s.

Inside, you will find a wide nave with north and south aisles, a plain but well-proportioned chancel, and memorials to the Montague and Cowdray families whose estate dominated the town for centuries. The stained glass, timber roof and quiet side chapels are worth a slow walk around, and information boards near the entrance explain the church's links to the ruined Tudor mansion just across the causeway.

The churchyard is a pleasant, shaded spot with old stone walls and views towards Church Hill's timber-framed cottages, one of the prettiest corners of Midhurst. It is an easy stop to combine with a stroll around the town's independent shops, the Spread Eagle Hotel, and a walk over to the Cowdray Ruins and River Rother beyond.
