South Pond, Midhurst

South Pond sits at the southern edge of Midhurst, a wide ornamental lake that has been a fixture of the town since the 19th century. Fed by the River Rother catchment, it was originally used to power a nearby mill and later became the focus of a public open space, with a level tarmac path circling the water. It is one of the most photographed spots in town, particularly when the swans, mallards and Canada geese gather along the banks.

The pond is a short, easy walk from the historic centre and makes an obvious pause point for anyone wandering between Midhurst's timber-framed buildings and the Cowdray ruins. Benches line the perimeter, there is a small play area for children on the southern side, and the shallow water is stocked and used for coarse fishing under permit. In summer the surrounding grass draws picnickers; in winter the reflections of the surrounding trees and the church tower are striking.

Practical to reach on foot from the main car parks and bus stops on North Street, South Pond is best combined with a stroll up through the old town and onto the Cowdray Estate walks beyond. Allow around 20 to 30 minutes to loop the water, longer if the ducks slow you down.
