About Roman Army Museum

The Roman Army Museum sits just off the B6318 Military Road near Greenhead in Northumberland, beside the remains of the Roman fort of Carvoran (Magnis) on the line of Hadrian's Wall. Run by the Vindolanda Charitable Trust, it is dedicated to telling the story of the ordinary soldier on Rome's northern frontier and complements the larger Vindolanda site a short drive to the east.

Three principal galleries cover the wider Roman Empire, life in a frontier garrison, and the recruitment, training and equipment of an auxiliary soldier. Interactive displays, life-size figures and original artefacts excavated locally, including weapons, armour fragments, tools and personal items, are used to bring the daily routine of the wall to life. A short film, Edge of Empire, projected in 3D, sets the museum's story in its dramatic landscape.

Outside, visitors can walk a short distance to a particularly fine surviving stretch of Hadrian's Wall at Walltown Crags, where the curtain wall snakes along volcanic dolerite outcrops with sweeping views over the Tyne Gap. The combination of museum, fort site and walking country makes this one of the most rewarding stops on the central section of the wall.
