Lumley Castle

Lumley Castle is an enchanting 14th‑century quadrangular fortress set on a bluff above the River Wear in Chester‑le‑Street, just north of Durham. Commissioned by Sir Ralph Lumley around 1389 after his return from Scotland, it bears a classic medieval layout: four stone ranges built around an inner courtyard, punctuated by crenellated towers and robust ashlar sandstone walls  Licenses to crenellate were granted in 1382 and 1392, conferring its fortified character.

Shortly after its construction, Lumley’s involvement in the Epiphany Rising led to his execution in 1400, but ownership later reverted to his grandson Thomas in 1421. Over the centuries, the castle was enhanced: in the late 1500s John, 1st Baron Lumley, added large windows, an ornate fireplace, and a marble lavabo in the great hall—displaying the Lumley coat‑of‑arms pelican. A Georgian redesign in about 1721, possibly by Sir John Vanbrugh, introduced tasteful alterations, particularly in the library (now the Black Knight Restaurant).

In the 19th century, the castle became the residence of the Bishop of Durham, later serving as the University College, Durham’s first‑year student halls until the 1960s. In 1976 it was transformed into a 73‑bedroom luxury hotel under the “No Ordinary Hotels” banner, though it remains owned by the Earl of Scarbrough.

Today, guests experience a seamless fusion of medieval grandeur and modern comfort. The hotel offers stately rooms, fine dining, bars, and themed experiences such as Escape Rooms in the old beer cellar . Overlooking the Durham County Cricket Club’s Riverside Ground, it’s also a picturesque backdrop for sporting events.

Lumley Castle’s reputation as one of County Durham’s most haunted places adds to its mystique. The legend of Lily Lumley—a supposed victim of betrayal whose ghost haunts the well—is frequently recounted, with both local folklore and visiting cricketers reporting paranormal encounters.
