Greenhead Hotel

The Greenhead Hotel stands in the centre of the small Northumberland village of Greenhead, just off the A69 between Haltwhistle and Brampton. Built in local stone, the inn has long served travellers heading along the Tyne Gap and walkers tackling the central section of Hadrian's Wall, which runs along the ridges immediately to the north.

The building has the feel of a classic country pub, with beams, open fires and a bar serving real ales alongside a menu of pub classics aimed squarely at hungry walkers. Rooms upstairs make it a useful overnight stop on the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail, and the adjacent former church now operates as an independent hostel, giving the village a long tradition of welcoming long-distance walkers.

From the door it is an easy walk to Thirlwall Castle, the ruined 14th-century border tower built partly from stones robbed from the Roman Wall, and onward to Walltown Crags, one of the most dramatic stretches of Hadrian's Wall still standing. The Roman Army Museum at Carvoran, the Walltown Quarry picnic site and Greenhead's request stop on the Tyne Valley railway line all lie within a short distance, making the hotel a practical base for exploring the western half of the Wall country.
