Frensham Little Pond, Farnham

Frensham Little Pond lies just a short distance south of its larger neighbour, another surviving medieval fishpond built by the Bishop of Winchester. At approximately 8 acres, it is considerably smaller but no less atmospheric, nestled within mixed woodland that creates a more intimate setting than the open heathland surrounding Great Pond. The water remains clear and home to similar wildlife populations, making it an important ecological site within the wider Frensham Common network.

The footpath encircles the pond and provides gentle walking opportunities suitable for all abilities. The woodland setting offers good shade in summer months and delivers changing seasonal colours throughout the year. The site attracts keen birdwatchers and photographers seeking quieter access to wildlife observation, as it receives fewer visitors than the larger pond. Benches at intervals allow visitors to pause and watch for waterfowl, including ducks, grebes and occasionally visiting herons.

Like its larger counterpart, Little Pond continues a heritage reaching back more than 700 years and is valued for both its historical character and its role within the modern nature conservation landscape. The two ponds together represent an exceptional survival of medieval fishery management in the Surrey landscape.
