About Frensham Great Pond, Farnham
Frensham Great Pond is a historic 44-acre freshwater lake created in the 13th century as a fishpond for the Bishop of Winchester. Today it remains one of the most tranquil natural spaces in the Farnham area, bordered by woodland, heathland and managed conservation areas. The pond sits at the heart of Frensham Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest designated for its important habitats.
Visitors can enjoy gentle waterside walks along the perimeter path, which offers views across the water and opportunities to spot waterfowl, dragonflies and other wildlife. The surrounding heathland provides open spaces ideal for picnics, and there are several car parks and access points nearby. Birdwatchers are particularly drawn to the site, especially during spring and autumn migrations. The pond's clear waters and natural setting make it a popular spot for family outings and nature photography throughout the year.
The site is managed as a nature reserve and continues a tradition of stewardship stretching back centuries. Its combination of historical significance and ecological value makes it a valued community resource and an important refuge for wildlife in the densely populated south-east.
