Farnham Castle Keep, Farnham

Farnham Castle Keep is the substantial remains of a 12th-century fortress built by Henry II to command the Wey valley, standing at the northern edge of modern Farnham. The motte-and-bailey castle originally included a wooden palisade, later replaced by the surviving stone keep built around 1160. This cylindrical tower, some 70 feet tall, once formed part of a defensive ring protecting the Bishop of Winchester's authority over the surrounding landscape. The castle occupied a strategically important position where roads converged and the river valley provided natural defence.

The keep and its associated earthwork mounds remain prominent landmarks visible across a wide area. Visitors can walk around the exterior and climb the surrounding terraces, which provide unfolding views toward the Wey valley and distant North Downs. The site is managed as an accessible public monument, with interpretation explaining the castle's military and administrative significance. The overlying modern town centre has grown around the castle's lower slopes, creating an unusual but effective integration of medieval monument and contemporary streetscape.

Farnham Castle Keep stands as a tangible symbol of 12th-century Norman authority and remains one of Surrey's most architecturally distinctive medieval monuments. Its survival as a substantial stone structure offers rare insight into the military engineering and territorial strategy of the Norman period.
