Bishop Auckland Town Hall

Bishop Auckland Town Hall dominates the northern side of the Market Place, a striking French Gothic Revival building completed in 1862. Designed by architects John Johnstone and Joseph Philip Pritchett, it features pointed arched windows, a steeply pitched roof and a corner tower topped with a slate spire, giving the town centre much of its Victorian civic character. It was originally built to house council offices, a corn exchange and public meeting rooms, reflecting the town's growth as a coalfield centre in the 19th century.

Today the building operates as a lively community hub combining a library, tourist information, a cinema, an art gallery and cafe under one roof. The programme covers touring exhibitions, live music, comedy, film screenings and children's activities, and the ground floor is generally open through the day for casual visits, browsing the exhibitions or stopping for a coffee. It sits directly opposite St Anne's Church and is a good place to pick up information before exploring the rest of Bishop Auckland.

The town hall is a short walk from Auckland Castle and the wider Auckland Project sites, so it fits easily into a day exploring the town's heritage attractions. Even if you're just passing through, the exterior is worth a look for its confident Victorian architecture.
