All Saints' Church, Hertford

All Saints' Church stands on Queen's Road on the eastern side of Hertford town centre, its tall spire visible from across the valley of the River Lea. The present church was built between 1893 and 1905 in Perpendicular Gothic style, replacing an earlier medieval building destroyed by fire in 1891. The architect Paley and Austin designed a spacious interior of pale stone, with tall arcades and large clerestory windows that give the church a notably light feel.

Inside, the church contains stained glass by leading Victorian and Edwardian designers, an ornate reredos and a substantial pipe organ. Several monuments and memorials were rescued from the fire and reinstated, giving a sense of continuity with the earlier building. The tower houses a full ring of ten bells.

The churchyard is a peaceful green space overlooking the town, and the church remains an active parish serving Hertford. Visitors are welcome during opening hours and for regular services.
